MONTEREY, Calif. - A man accused of several burglaries statewide, including several in Monterey, has been arrested in Sacramento.  The suspect was recently identified by DNA as Raymond Vasquez, a 68-year-old man most recently living in Rancho Cordova.

The Monterey Police Department got three arrest warrants representing eleven commercial burglaries in Monterey between 2009 and 2012 for a total bail of $370,000. Vasquez was arrested Friday in Sacramento with the help of the Department of Veterans Affairs Police Services.

Since 2009, the Monterey Police Department has been investigating burglaries attributed to Vasquez, when his DNA profile was identified during a commercial burglary investigation. Evidence from that burglary had been sent to the California Department of Justice and in 2010 a DNA profile from an "unknown" male was obtained.  MPD obtained the first "John Doe" arrest warrant in Monterey County in order to toll the statute of limitations as the suspect was genetically identified, but his name was not known. Since that time, MPD obtained other DNA evidence from commercial burglaries in Monterey. However, the suspect's DNA was not in the system and his name remained unknown.

In May 2012, MPD issued a photograph of the suspect captured on video footage related to one of the burglaries and MPD received information that led them to investigate Vasquez as the possible suspect.

The following is a list of the Monterey cases attributed to Vasquez:

November 20, 2009, a salon at 850 Munras Ave. #4, Monterey

November 17, 2010, Chong's Restaurant, 485 Tyler, Monterey

June 11, 2011, Chinatown Restaurant, 600 Munras, Monterey

June 11, 2011, Valley Health Associates, 114 Webster, Monterey

June 11, 2011, Resource Real Estate Loans, 654 Cass Street, Monterey

June 11, 2011, Creative Hair Design, 631 C Cass Street, Monterey

July 23, 2011, Flor de Monterey, 217 West Franklin, Monterey

July 23, 2011, Maha's Cuisine, 470 Alvarado, Monterey

November 9, 2011, Polished, 584 Houston, Monterey

November 9, 2011, Well Springs Health, 187D El Dorado, Monterey

May 9, 2012, Mrs. Delish's Cupcakes, 800 Lighthouse B, Monterey

More charges are pending from a recent DNA hit from evidence found at a burglary to Parker Lousseau Pastry, 539 Hartnell on January 28, 2012.  Additional investigation is pending on numerous other burglaries in the same area during the same time frame.

Vasquez has been linked by DNA evidence to at least fifteen other commercial burglaries in the San Francisco bay area and Southern California.

Without the tool of DNA technology and the assistance of the media, most, if not all of these cases would not have been solved and would not have been linked to one individual.
