Posted: Updated:

SANTA CRUZ, Calif.- No you're not dreaming. A brave and brainy team from Santa Cruz will dress up in banana suits, perform a skit and push their giant banana craft and slug pilot off a 30 foot flight deck in an attempt to fly.

The team in Santa Cruz will be part of the Red Bull Flugtag, the outrageous human-powered flying competition held every year.

The compeition will swoop in for a landing in San Francisco's McCovey Cove on Saturday, November 10. Red Bull Flugtag, which means "Flying Day" in German, was held in San Francisco in 2002, and this year will celebrate the event's 10th U.S. Anniversary.

Flugtag, gives everyday Joes and Janes the chance to be heroes for the day when they launch their homemade human-powered flying machines off a 30-foot high flight deck before plunging into the waters waiting below.

According to a news release from organizers, a group of UC Santa Cruz classmates and friends created the team, "When Slugs Fly." The pilot is Greg Gerschenson and his flight crew is Armand Yazdani, Amin Ronaghi, Dara Rohouliman, Alon Rogenstein.

Slugs Fly captain Greg Gerschenson was quoted in the news release as saying,"we'll just literally throw our craft past the world record mark." The team consists of members of the UC Santa Cruz Ski and Snowboard Club.

In addition to strength, the team has no shortage of determination. "Our heart," Greg promises, "is undeniable."
