MOSS LANDING, Calif. -- Ripped off. California dairy farmers said they're being paid less for their milk used in cheese compared to other states.
And they said it's hurting their bottom line.
"That impacts us," said Lou Calcagno, dairy farmer in Moss Landing. "It comes off of our top gross dollar."
Calcagno said the drought in the midwest is making operating costs too expensive.
He said he's still feeling the effects from earlier this year when he lost nearly $3,000 a day.
"What dairy farmers are saying is that formula needs to be revised that that formula is giving too much money to the manufacturer and taking it away from the dairy farmer," he said.
On Thursday, hundreds of dairy owners and supporters protested at the State Capitol, asking the state to increase whey and milk prices the dairy owners said puts them at a disadvantage compared to other states.
Dairy farmers said they're paid $2 per hundred-weight less for their milk that's used in cheese.
"If they don't do it, there are dairies continuously selling out every day," Calcagno said.
