Pot Dispensary Forced To Take Down Advertising Signs

Posted: Updated:

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- A pot business called its signs advertising, but the county told it to take them down.

The Santa Cruz Mountain Herb put out signs on Highway 17 promoting marijuana for $125/ounce.

The manager of the non-profit medical marijuana shop said he was forced to take the signs down.

Daniel Hwang said it was an attempt to get more customers inside to buy, since the months have been slow.

"The price is a good price. No one else compares to our price," he said.

He said he put out the four-by-eight signs on the highway because it gets a lot of traffic.

Hwang said Santa Cruz county officials said the signs violate the county rules, because the medical marijuana ordinance doesn't allow such advertising.

While Hwang said he felt he had the right to put the signs out, he wheeled the signs back inside as soon as he found out the fuss they were causing.

"I want to keep the rule," he said. "Whatever the county says, we have to follow."

Central Coast News was still waiting to hear back from county officials as of Thursday evening.

Meanwhile, viewers were sounding off on our Facebook page about whether Hwang should have been allowed to keep the signs up.
