Mixed Feelings About Going in Water with High Levels of Bacteria

Posted: Updated:

PACIFIC GROVE, Calif. -- Theres at least five of signs all around Lovers Point Park Beach, warning people about high levels of bacteria, but people are still going inside the water. People like Jo Murray who lives in Salinas.

"We came the other day and we didn't go in we went to the other side and played in the sand," said Murray.

Yet, on Thursday, Murray just couldn't say no to her Grandkids, who are visiting from Arizona, even if the Health Department does not recommend swimming.

"I told my Grandson to close his mouth," said Murray.

Murray is not alone, dozens of parents ignored the signs.

Sat Khalsa didn't. This was Khasa's explanation to her daughter of why people were in the water: "I told her it was because the people can't read."

The Khalsa family took a bike ride all the way from Seaside to swim and hangout on the beach, only for the warning signs, to stop them in their tracks.

In the short time we were there three families said their beach day was ruined, forced to sit at a distance and watch the tempting cool water.

"You want to join, this is a beautiful day. But at the same time what is the level of bacteria and will it hurt my baby?"
