Save The Train Group Working With Monterey

Posted: Updated:

MONTEREY, Calif.-- The biggest concern the city has with the Dennis the Menace train is safety. Are kids going to get hurt when they play on it?

A playground inspector told Central Coast News the height of the train stands out as the main issue. So we measured what we could of the of train, and the height was roughly more than 16-feet-tall.

Right next to the train in Dennis the Menace Park is a rock climbing wall, the height of that wall was about 8-feet-tall.

Not only is there a height difference but if kids were to fall off of the rock climbing wall, the fall is not as hard when falling off the train.

However, the height is just one of many safety issues that according to the City need to be addressed.

Save the Train, a grass roots group, is working to find a playground inspector that will agree to take on the project of deciding what changes will make the train meet state code.

The City has said the liability is too great. If a kid was to get hurt it could face a lawsuit that could bankrupt Monterey.

Yet, today, some hope! Save the Train and the City agreed to work together to find an inspector and just maybe the next time kids follow the tracks before the train, they won't be shut out.

The City has also reached out Disneyland in hopes of finding an inspector.
