HOLLISTER, Calif. -- Police said people should be careful about the information they post regarding crimes because it could jeopardize their investigations.
Neighborhood Watch groups are very active on the central coast, and many people are taking to Facebook to report crimes, sometimes before even notifying police.
"I don't want to limit someone's free speech, but of course I want to make sure if we have a crime that we have all the information that we can use to arrest the people that are responsible for the crime," said David Westrick, Hollister interim police chief.
He said the best thing people should do is contact their local police department directly to report a crime.
If they post online, they shouldn't be too specific about the suspect's method of operation.
"Sometimes if you put out more information than you should, then those people that are responsible might be warned that we're looking for them and take precautions in order to not get caught in this crime," he said.
