Support Slipping for Proposition 37

Posted: Updated:

SACRAMENTO-- Support is slipping for the ballot measure requiring labeling of genetically-engineered food.

One of the measures on the upcoming California ballot is an initiative which would require the labeling of some genetically-engineered foods. Early polling showed it had been favored by a large majority of likely voters, but no longer. Support for Proposition 37 has slipped following a major campaign blitz by the measure's opponents.

They include several large biotech and pesticide companies, which genetically modify a number of the foods we eat. Modified tomatoes, corn and soybean would all require labeling. But some genetically-engineered, or g-e, foods would be exempt, including dairy products, meat and alcohol. Opponents of the measure say that shows it is too confusing and contradictory. They also claim labeling would drive up food prices.

The latest poll, by Pepperdine University and the California Roundtable Association, shows about 48 percent of likely voters favor Proposition 37 with forty percent against and the rest undecided.
