SPCA is Helping Out Rescued Hens

Posted: Updated:

On Sunday, the SPCA for Monterey County will allow people to adopt hens rescued last February.

An estimated 50,000 hens at A&L Poultry, west of Turlock in Stanislaus County, were discovered after being abandoned for two weeks without feed. The majority died or had to be euthanized.

Four thousand  surviving hens were taken in by an animal sanctuary in Grass Valley, CA.

This Sunday at 10:00 am, the SPCA will take in 25 of these rescued hens with the goal of adopting them into local homes. The hens are one and a half year old white leghorns. They are described as calm, becoming very friendly and curious with attention from adopters. Leghorns are well known as good egg layers, laying extra large white eggs.

The hens will be adopted for $5 to homes that will care for the chicken as pets or for their eggs.

The hens will arrive 10am on Sunday.
