Teachers Union Gives $2M to Defeat November Ballot Issue

Posted: Updated:

The California Teacher's Association just gave another 2 million dollars to defeat the november ballot initiative.

The California Teacher's Association is made up of 325-thousand members-- including teachers, counselors, school librarians and social workers- all advocating for educators in California. Contributions by the association to defeat prop 32 have surpassed 20 million dollars.

One of the yes side's arguments for banning payroll deductions directly from workers paychecks for campaign purposes is so that all contributions are truly voluntary.

But according to one union member, contributions to campaigns are already voluntary.

Nikki Milevsky is a member of the California Teacher's Association. "It's the same amount every month, there have been years that we've voted to put more money to one thing or another that was very important to us but it's always been optional. You could check a box for the money to go toward another avenue if you chose so. It's always been voluntary so you can donate to another if you chose so."

Political watchdog group, the fair political practices commission, is investigating two "yes on Prop 32" campaign committees, after the "no side" filed a formal complaint over 8 million dollars the measure's supporters spent on media ads last month.
