SALINAS, Calif. - The Monterey County Jail in Salinas will turn into a construction zone soon. The jail received a $36.2 million grant to help expand its facilities.
The grant was given because of the number of inmates the Monterey County jail sends to state prisons each month.
Currently, the jail is built to hold 825 inmates. However, because of realignment there are more than a thousand currently staying each day.
Governor Brown's realignment has placed one extra inmate to the facility each day.
The plans include building another medium security wing to the facility that would hold 144 cells, two beds a piece, for a total of 288 inmates. The new wing would increase the maximum capacity to 1,113 inmates.
The project is currently estimated as a $40 million project and would not be completed for another 3-3.5 years.
The facility would be a non-reentry facility to help accommodate the safety concerns for surrounding neighborhoods.
On Wednesday, the county will hold an open house on site to explain the necessity for the facility, the construction process and to hear any concerns from the community.
The event is from 4-6 Wednesday, October 10 at the project site near the Monterey County Sheriff's Office at 1410 Natividad in Salinas.
