MORGAN HILL - A noose, two watermelons on a chair and a sign reading "Go back to Kenya, you idiot" is one man's front yard display that's stirring up quite the controversy in a local neighborhood.
With 28 days until the November election, many people in Morgan Hill say this is a racial message directed at the president.
The homeowner also has a sign in his yard supporting Mitt Romney.
Some people are saying displays like this are evidence of the tense political climate and it's going too far.
People driving down Foothill Avenue on Tuesday in Morgan Hill couldn't believe their eyes and had to do a double take.
One man stopped in the middle of the road, while one woman pulled over to snap a photo.
"It looks pretty racist to me," said Dena Wolfenbarger of Morgan Hill.
The homeowner wasn't there on Tuesday and declined an interview with our affiliate on Monday.
Everyone who spoke with Central Coast News on Tuesday was shocked by the display, but some said it's not fair to stop some rights to free speech and not others.
"I think we have to realize that sometimes people are expressing their right to express their views and we might not like it," said Carol Neal of Morgan Hill, a Romney supporter.
While many people are calling the display offensive and disturbing, others are saying if you don't like it, go somewhere else.
The Santa Clara County Republican Party didn't support the display and a representative sent Central Coast News this statement: "I was appalled to find out about this patently offensive and racist display. It is antithetical to the core values of the Republican party. The Republican party of Santa Clara County condemns this display. In no way does it represent the views of our party."
But for some neighbors, it goes beyond party lines.
"I'm disappointed that this country hasn't moved along further in its acceptance of all people and all cultures," said Swanee Edwards of the Santa Clara County Democratic Party.
"There's really no need for that," said Chris Vetrosky of Morgan Hill.
