SALINAS, Calif. - A parolee was arrested Monday evening after officers say he punched his spouse several times. Officers responded to a domestic dispute that was happening inside a moving vehicle in the area of Harris Road at Abbott Street. The physical confrontation was witnessed by an off duty deputy who notified police.
42-year-old Hector Cornejo and his common law spouse have a seven month old child together. Shortly after 6:00 p.m. Monday, officers say they were involved in a heated argument. Cornejo punched his spouse several times in the face.
Unfortunately for Cornejo, the off-duty deputy was traveling right behind them in his personal vehicle and witnessed much of the incident. He saw the fight escalate as they pulled over at least twice. At one point, Cornejo tried to drive off with the victim hanging out of the vehicle. The vehicle was being driven erratically and their child was later found to be in the back seat unsecured in an unsecured child seat.
The off duty deputy called police who arrived a short time later and pulled over the vehicle Cornejo was driving. As the vehicle stopped Cornejo tried to run away but he was caught a short distance away.
Cornejo, who was also found to be on probation, was arrested on charges of spousal abuse, child endangerment, resisting arrest, and probation violation.
