MONTEREY, Calif- An illegal campfire near the Monterey Peninsula Airport Monday burned less than an acre of dry vegetation, but Cal Fire is warning of the high fire danger still during these fall months.
"We are still in fire season and the fuels are at critical stages and fires will still burn in cool weather," said Cal Fire officials in a news release Monday.
Firefighters responded to the call around 3:00 p.m. in the Cypress Fire Protection District on Monhollan Road near the entrance of Jacks Peak Park. Cypress FPD responded with assistance from CAL FIRE, Monterey Regional Airport District, State Parks, and the California Department of Corrections with approximately 40 firefighters on scene.
No homes or structures were threatened, according to Cal Fire.
Upon arrival, firefighters reported ¼ acre of vegetation involved with a slow rate of spread and no threat to any structures. With quick work from firefighters on the ground and air the fire was contained with no additional acreage consumed.
