SALINAS, Calif. - The Golden State hit an all time high Sunday at the pump. The state average ran up to $4.66 a gallon breaking the state record set the day before. Saturday's prices at the pump broke a previous record marked in 2008.
Experts are blaming the sudden increase in prices to the mishaps that happened in Southern California and the Bay area. Last Monday, an Exxon Refinery in Southern California lost power for quite some time. Power was restored on Friday and that could cause the prices to stabilize soon.
They also say the switch between the summer and winter blends could be a factor. Because of California Environmental Laws, refineries are required to make the switch but that does not normally come until the first of November.
Governor Brown asked for this to happen now to help relieve some of the pain going on at the pump.
Wholesale prices have begun to drop so pump prices should drop down. It will not happen overnight, however. Gas stations will keep prices at this level to make up the large amount they were forced to pay when barrels sky-rocketed.
