SACRAMENTO, Calif.—Gov. Jerry Brown's November tax proposal seeks to levy taxes to pay for education. Now republican backed opponents are asking California television and radio stations to stop running ads. Why? They say the ads make false claims.
The three ads in question say Proposition 30 revenue from the temporary sales and income tax increases the governor seeks can't be utilized by Sacramento politicians. An independent review by the State Legislative Analyst office and Brown's previous statements may belie that claim.
A letter was sent out Friday by the No on 30 campaign asking stations to not use the adds. They claim the spots are "a vehicle to mislead voters."
The budget signed by Governor Brown earlier this year calls for $6 billion in cuts to K-12 schools and colleges if Proposition 30 fails. But if Prop 30 passes there should be additional monies to support general fund expenses.
