Watch Out For Text Message Scams

Posted: Updated:

CALIFORNIA- It's a Consumer Alert for anyone with a cell phone, crooks have found a new way to get their hands on your credit card information.

In the latest attempt to steal your financial information, crooks are using text messaging to pose as your bank.  Text messages are sent by someone claiming to be Bank of America. When you call the number an automated voice says "This is Bank of America" and asks you to enter your credit card number. Some people are getting tripped up by the scam because they don't realize they can have the same first digits of their credit cards as many other people.

Central Coast News called Bank of America and a spokesperson said these text messages are a scam.

Bank of America said if you get a message asking for your personal information, such as your social security or credit card number, it's not from them. Commonly the scammers will make urgent appeals, such as saying your card would have limited access because of possible fraud, said a Bank of America spokesperson.

You can report suspicious text messages to your carrier by texting the code 7-7-2-6. If you are a Bank of America customer you can forward it to abuse@bankofamerica.com
