The US unemployment rate fell to 7.8 percent, dropping below 8 percent for the first time in nearly four years, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics report released Friday.
According to the report, the number of people who said they were employed soared to 873,000, contributing to September's low unemployment rate.
The Labor Department said US employers added 114,000 jobs in September, bringing the number of employed Americans to 12.1 million, the fewest since January 2009. The department also said, the economy added 86,000 job more jobs in July and August than initially estimated.
According to the report, employment grew the most in health care, transportation and warehousing, but grew little in most other major industries, according to the report.
These numbers give President Barack Obama a potential boost with the election just a month away. Republican Presidential Nominee Mitt Romney's campaign issued a statement saying, "This is not what real recoery looks like. We created fewes jobs in September than in August, and fewer jobs in August than July."
