MONTEREY-- The city is looking into whether to pass legislation introduced by Assemblyman Bill Monning, that will exempt the Dennis the Menace train from state playground safety laws.
Some residents claim the landmark is unsafe. Others want the fence surrounding the attraction, torn down.
The City placed that temporary fence around the engine last summer after three kids fell during a nine-month period.
The train is named after a popular comic strip, written by Hank Ketchum, a Carmel resident who died in 2001 at the age of 81.
Dennis the Menace was the freckle-face scamp in droopy overalls whose mischievous childhood adventures delighted readers for 50 years.
There had once been a "Dennis the Menace" statue in the park.. but it was stolen in 2006.
Hank Ketchum's family agreed to make a copy of the statue to replace the stolen one.
The replacement was installed in 2007, at a cost of $30,000. It is cemented into the ground to prevent anyone from taking it.
