Monterey Police Looking for Attempted Rape Suspect Who Broke Into Victim's House

Posted: Updated:

MONTEREY, Calif- Police are looking for a man who they say broke into a home Wednesday night and tried to rape a woman .

According to police, the suspect got into the home on the 1100 block of Prescott Avenue through an unlocked door.  He tried to sexually assault the woman who was inside at the time, said police.

The woman's roommate, who didn't want to talk on camera, tells us her friend fought the suspect off with a pair off scissors, cutting a lot of his hair off as she was being sexually assaulted.  Neighbors in the quaint, hillside Monterey neighborhood said they're stunned.

"Everybody thinks this is one of the best places to live in the whole state of California.  So that seems like a surprise that it would happen," said Debra Schulte.

Police said the suspect entered the home on Prescott Avenue through an unlocked door and tried to rape the woman.  Neighbors said they didn't hear or see any signs of a struggle coming from the home.  But one resident describes what he saw, shortly after the suspect was able to get away, leaving the victim with minor injuries.

"There was a police car parked out front of the house, came out and had a look and there were two police cars with a pick up truck in between them," said resident John Haley.

Police said they're not sure why this woman's home became a target and that's putting residents on edge.

"Yes it's a quiet neighborhood, not much going on as far as crime goes.  Yeah, that's a little shocking and close to home," Haley said.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic male, in his late teens to early 20's, approximately 5'7" with a medium build and a medium to dark complexion. The suspect had curly or wavy hair that was long and to his shoulders or shoulder blades.  He was last seen wearing a dark shirt and either jeans or khakis.  He may have fled in a silver or gray, 80's model Datsun 280z type vehicle.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Monterey Police Department at 831-646-3830 or the confidential tip line at 831-646-3840.
