DENVER, Colorado - The first debate has come and gone but not before leaving some people thinking. The debate began with a handshake and it was out of the gates from there.
PBS Anchor, Jim Lehrer, was the moderator for this debate. He explained the format, asked the questions and the attacking began.
Governor Mitt Romney spent most of the night attacking the president and his policies. On the other hand, President Obama seemed to highlight the lack of specifics from the former governor's plans.
"If the tax plan he described were a tax plan I was asked to support, I would say absolutely not," said Romney.
But Obama fired back saying, "For 18 months he's been running on this tax plan. And now, five weeks before the election, he's saying that his big, bold idea is, 'Never mind.'"
The debate made its way to a discussion on healthcare where Romney shared his opinion to "Obama"care and how he would change it. The debate ended with a quick question on governing.
Following the debate, experts say it could sway the polls now.
According to CBS instant news poll, almost half say Governor Romney won the debate. And 63% say they now believe he does care for people's needs and their problems, which is 30% higher than before the debate. Today, 56% say they like Romney better after the debate.
"Anytime a challenger stands on stage with the President in the first debate, they tend to get some bounce out of it. I expect that could happen here," said David Axelrod, Obama's senior advisor.
The next debate will be between their running mates on October 11, Romney and Obama will square off on October 16 and wrapping up just two weeks before election night, in the could be deciding state of Florida, on October 22.
