Movie being Made about Hit and Run Death of Cyclist

Posted: Updated:

Santa Cruz, Calif.   A film is in the works about the hit and run death of a Central Coast man.

Three filmmakers visited the spot where Josh Laven's body was found back in May.

He had been hit while cycling.  The filmmakers are looking into the hazards of cycling.

Josh's story made headlines because his dog, Ozziet, stayed by his side until someone discovered Josh.

The movie crew was accompanied by the woman who found Josh on the side of Highway 1.

The film will be called "spoke" --- but no word on when the movie will be finished.

Laven's family searches for answers:

SANTA CRUZ, Calif.-- June 15, 2012 -  Family of Hit and Run Victim Offers Reward for Answers. Outside the Santa Cruz County Courthouse, the family of 39 year old Josh Laven met to ask anybody with information about their son's death to come forward. Josh died over a month ago after being hit by a car along Highway 1. His beloved dog Ozziet stayed by his owners side for hours until he was found.

Josh's mother Jennifer Putnam says their family is looking to raise $10,000 for the person who can lead deputies to the arrest of the person responsible for killing him. The family also wants to find closure. "We wish you would come forward and let us know what happened. How would you like it if it was one of your family members that was left on the side of the road to die with his dog," said Jennifer Putnam.

Josh's body was discovered May 4th by a group of bicyclists. Deputies say he had been on the side of the road for at least 8 to 10 hours. Josh was doing a memorial ride for a good friend who died of a heart attack last year. He was riding across the U.S. Josh's family says he almost made it. "He was 100 miles from his destination," said Putnam.

Right now CHP is still investigating the accident. They described the car that hit Josh as a 2002-2005 Dodge Ram Pick-up.

Joan Leithner was one of the cyclists who spotted Josh's dog Ozziet laying by his side. She said it's a sight she'll never forget. "Scattered. There were things, everything that I saw was in the bike lane so I don't know if there were things that might have been in the road or that may have been thrown out," said Leithner.

As for Josh's beloved dog Ozziet, he is being adopted by the woman who found him. "He's doing good considering all he's been through," said Leithner.

Since Josh's death, many bicyclists have been weary as to whether they should ride on major highways. "To be honest I won't ride on Highway 1 again after this incident. We didn't finish our ride that day. We tried again and the cars just go so fast," said Leithner.
