Monterey, CA -- A community rallied last night around a historic train stationed at a popular Monterey Playground.
As the city weighs the safety risks, many people want the green fence taken down around the train at Dennis the Menace Park near Lake El Estero.
Last night, the Monterey City Council voted on two different actions.
First, they unanimously decided to ask State Assembly member Bill Monning to introduce legislation that would exempt the train engine at Dennis the Menace Park from state playground safety laws.
They also decided to have a safety expert look into how they can make the train safer so it complies with state laws.
The decision comes after the three children, ages 2 to 5, fell from the train during a nine month period last year. That led the Parks and Recreation Department to put a permanent fence around it.
The engine has been part of the Dennis the Menace Playground since it opened in 1956.
