No Decision For Dennis the Menace Train

Posted: Updated:

MONTEREY, Calif. -- It all started at the end of August, when the city put a fence up, warning park goers to be safe around the Dennis the Menace Playground. The fence was put there to protect kids from a train that has been there since 1956. The city says it was dangerous.

After a month of talks, council members brought the public in Tuesday night, to weigh the history of the train, against state playground safety standards. People voiced their opinions about the future of the train. But no decision was made.

Proponents of the train say the solution lies somewhere in the "middle".

"It does look like there are changes that can be made that would make it safer for children, closing off the top possibly, closing some of the hazardous areas underneath the train where kids can fit their hands. There are some definite changes that can be made to make it safer and up to code," said Brian Flores, organizer of the Save the Train group.
