SALINAS, Calif.-- It all happened in a matter of 48 hours: the crime, the standoff, and the death of the man accused of being behind it all, Richard Chacon Junior.
Police say the crime took place Thursday morning at the Walmart off North Main in Salinas. When Chacon dressed as a security guard came into the Walmart, tied up the manager and robbed it a gun point.
What's more, police say Chacon's nephew, Jose Augustine, was working at the Walmart at the time of the robbery. With the help of security footage, police were able to identify Chacon and followed him to a house on Sunflower Lane off Constitution.
That's when Chacon fired at officers, who fired back, shooting Chacon. Chacon was taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
In the meantime, for 16 hours, no one was allowed in or out of the block where Chacon was shot. Eventually police made their way into the home, they also served a search warrant at a second home on Paloma Avenue.
By the end of it all police found two hand guns, two high powered rifles, a lot of ammunition and cash from the robbery
But the question remains, how was Chacon's nephew an integral part of the armed robbery?
Right now police are staying quiet about the connection. However, Augstin was in arraigned in court on Monday afternoon, he pleaded not guilty.
But what police are saying is that Chacon, a man who worked as a surgical tech at SVMH, has had run-ins with police in the past.
