SALINAS, Calif- Residents that live near Boronda and Constitution in Salinas are still dealing with shock after a gun battle sparked out between Police and an armed robbery suspect in their quiet neighborhood.
"I kind of thought 'Is she kidding?'and I wasn't really sure but then i can tell by her voice that she was frazzled and upset"
Mike Danielsen refers to his wife Rosie Danielsen, who called him Friday to tell him that Salinas Police were exchanging gun fire with, who they believe to be their next door neighboor..Richard Chacon.
Investigators say they believe Richard Chacon is the man responsible for an armed robbery at the WalMart store on North Main Street, Thursday.
There, Police say Chacon dressed up as an armored car security guard and held the WalMart Manager at gunpoint, demanding cash.
Chacon got away Thursday but surveillance footage led Undercover Officers to track Chacon down.
On Friday afternoon around 1 p.m., officers followed Chacon until he stopped his car near Boronda and Constitution, opened his door and began firing upon officers.
Two Salinas Police Officers were not hit but fired back upon Chacon.
Friday night, Salinas Police said Chacon had died from his injuries.
"You had a perfect view of what was going on, because it was happening right in front of the driveway."
Rosie Danielsen looks out her bathroom window, showing us where she witnessed the gun battle happen.
A short time after the shooting occured, Rosie and her mother-in-law were evacuated from their home.
At one point, Salinas Police even used the Danielsen's backyard, moving patio furniture up against a fence, so they could get a better view of what was happening at the suspect's alleged home, located next door.
Around 11 p.m., the Danielsen family was finally allowed back into their home.
"From what we were told, we were the only family allowed to come back in this part of the neighborhood and it was because my mother-in-laws conditions." Mike Danielsen says, looking back on what happened.
Salinas Police remained on the scene until 5 a.m. Saturday but according to officers that spoke with Central Coast News, no one ever entered the suspect's home.
'Why were they out there so long?' is the question most Salinas residents are asking on Saturday.
Salins Police told Central Coast News that no more information is due to be released on the incident but that a News Conference may be held on Monday to provide further insight into the incident.
Residents in the neighborhood say the Chacon family recently moved into the neighborhood and were quiet, often keeping to themselves.
