SALINAS, Calif- Salinas Police have cleared the scene of a nearly 16 hour standoff in the area of Boronda and Constitution Drive with no further arrests or incidents overnight.
According to Salinas Police, all officers were removed from the scene allowing residents full access to their homes in the area shortly after 5 a.m.
At this time, it is unclear why the standoff operation took place for so long.
The whole story began approximately just after 12:30 p.m. Friday, when Salinas Investigators were following the man they believed to be responsible for an armed robbery at the Wal Mart on North Main Street Thursday.
In that Thursday robbery, a suspect dressed as an 'armored car security guard' approached the WalMart Manager at gunpoint around 10 a.m. and got away with an undisclosed amount of cash.
After reviewing surveillance footage of the incident, Salinas Police were able to piece together a possible suspect in the case.
Early Friday afternoon, Salinas Police Investigators followed the alleged suspect in his car back to the suspect's home on Boronda, when Salinas Police say the suspect stopped his car, opened his door and began firing upon officers.
Salinas Police returned fire, hitting the suspect.
No officers were hit in the exchange of bullets.
The alleged suspect, 32-year-old Richard Chacon, later was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
