Hollister Neighborhood Fight Tagging With Flyers

Posted: Updated:

HOLLISTER, Calif. - If you walk along the walls of the quiet Scott Ranch neighborhood in Hollister, you will see that it's pretty well maintained, but if you take a closer look you will see the walls have covered up graffiti all along them, and the people who live beyond those walls are fighting back.

"We take pride in our neighborhood. We would come home and see a lot of tags. We started seeing gang graffiti. I didn't want my kids exposed to that," said a Scott Ranch neighbor, who wanted to stay anonymous.

The first rash of tags happened two years ago. According to neighbors, painting over it just wasn't enough.

"I would paint over them and they would tag over it."

With the help of Hollister police, they came up with flyers to hand out. The flyers have pictures of the graffiti and it promises a reward for anyone that knows who the culprits are. Turns out, the flyers worked.

"We were able to catch the suspects that were responsible for the graffiti in that area," said Hollister Police Chief David Westrick.

That is why when these tags popped up again two weeks ago, Scott Ranch neighbors decided to use flyers again. Starting Tuesday flyers will be posted and passed out throughout the Scott Ranch neighborhood. Organizers have no doubt these walls will remain graffiti free.

"Since there was an arrest last time, now they realize someone may be arrested."
