Pebble Beach, Calif.--Two neighborhoods are gearing up for a battle with Monterey County over proposed emergency communications towers. Residents claim the county is wasting millions of dollars for towers it can't legally construct.
Under a federal mandate to upgrade emergency communications by 2013, Monterey County has been planning since December of 2010 to construct massive 150 foot high microwave communications towers in two locations. At Huckleberry Hill on Sunset Lane in the Pebble Beach community and on Lewis Road in Royal Oaks in the north county, at a price tag of up to 24 million dollars.
About two years ago the county committed itself to design, build and operate the systems, but just in the last 6 months has the county even filed permits to move forward.
What has Pebble Beach residents up in arms is that the District 5 County Supervisor Dave Potter has yet to communicate with them on this project. Residents contend the county is putting the cart before the legal horse in this case. There was a meeting in Pebble Beach Monday and the Monterey County Planning Commission is meeting on Wednesday to further discuss the towers.
As of posting this report Supervisor Potter has yet to respond to our calls. This is a contentious issue with residents but the county is under the gun to upgrade. We'll continue to follow the story.
