Should Mayoral Candidates Be Held On A Higher Standard?

Posted: Updated:

SALINAS, Calif. - "I'm supposed to be different than anyone else? I'm like anybody else. I'm a family person. I'm a community member," said Margaret Serna Bonetti.

Bonetti is talking about a speeding ticket she got this weekend. A speeding ticket can happen to anyone.  But Bonetti was not just going 52 miles per hour in a 35 zone, she was also driving around with a suspended license.

"The officer informed me that my license had been suspended which I wasn't aware of," said Bonetti.

That raises the question, since Bonetti is running for local office, should we hold her to a higher standard than anyone else? Central Coast News took the question directly to Facebook. In a matter of minutes we received dozens of comments about the issue.

Jodi Massa said, "it's not holding her to a higher standard to expect her to obey the law."

Jaime Cardwell said, "maybe she didn't know her license was suspended. It happened to me before."

When asked shouldn't paying attention to small details be something a potential Mayor do?

Bonetti says, "there's always something that gets by us. And this happened to get by. I didn't know, I wasn't aware. But Jim aware now and its about handling it now."
