SANTA CRUZ, Calif.- A Central Coast man tries to hop a fence in Santa Cruz and things didn't go his way after that. Deputies said the 44-year-old man was impaled on the fence at the Public Storage on Portola Drive. Crews said a two foot pointy portion, designed to keep people out, went straight through his calf and almost came out the front.
Deputies said the man hung there for about a half an hour, until someone else showed and called 911. Crews said the man has a storage unit there. But he forgot his gate code and the front office wasn't open. So he tried to hop over. Once first responders got on scene, onlooker Mary Anne Gabay said they had a hard time with it too.
"When I was here, they were trying to get over the fence, but the fence was locked," Gabay said.
Gabay works just across the street and said she saw all the commotion at about 8:00AM. Fire crews said in this kind of situation, it's standard for them to cut where the person is trapped and allow a surgeon to remove the pieces.
"You could hear ambulances and the neighbor on the other side of our fence said she could hear some kind of howling or moaning," said Mary Anne Gabay.
Gabay said it was an unusual sight to see on a Monday.
"This is a pretty quiet street in terms of that kind of commotion," Gabay said.
The Santa Cruz Sheriff's Department said the man was taken to a Bay Area hospital and will not face any criminal charges.
