Police Say Santa Cruz Man Used Bad Checks to Scam Local Non-Profit, O'Neill Sea Odyssey

Posted: Updated:

SANTA CRUZ, Calif- Police arrested a man Monday on charges that he scammed several local businesses and people, claiming to host the Santa Cruz Dive Expo as a fundraiser for the O'Neill Sea Odyssey youth program.

Police said that Patrick Aki was the primary organizer of the Santa Cruz Dive Expo that was held at the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf on July 7. According to police, O'Neill Sea Odyssey never got any money for its non-profit youth program.

In addition, police said that Aki paid several local venders, who only agreed to help because they thought proceeds were going to charity, with bad checks. He paid for all the permits for the expo with checks from a closed account, said police.

Due to the extent of the "local scam" police believe there are more victims and more scams. Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact SCPD Detective DeOcampo at 831.420.5832 or leave a tip on our website or mobile apps.
