CARMEL, Calif. - Firefighters on the Central Coast will get what they have been wanting for more than a year. In August of 2011, firefighters asked the city of Carmel to place a memorial for the lives lost on September 11.
On the eleventh anniversary of the tragedy, their wish has been granted. The city of Carmel will give the public the first look at a piece of steel that has traveled from Ground Zero in New York to Carmel.
In a ceremony Tuesday morning, firefighters will carry the steel to Devendorf Park. Local churches will pray and musicians will play during the ceremony. Also, the audience will hear from a man that was in the Pentagon the day the attacks happened and two high school students that were affected from the attacks.
Following the ceremony, firefighters and other first responders will carry the steel from the park to the Harrison Memorial Main Library, where the memorial will be kept until it is placed in the park permanently on this day next year.
Also, in Salinas, city leaders will gather at the Steinbeck Hall on the Hartnell College campus at 9:00 to honor those. Active and retired military and other first responders are encouraged to attend in uniform.
Also, Salinas firefighters will hold another memorial at 10:30 this morning at the Fire Station #1 on West Alisal. This event is open to the public, as well.
