Watsonville Man Not Afraid to Fight Crime in His Neighborhood, Even If it Sends Him to the Hospital

WATSONVILLE, Calif - David Johnson has lived on Palm Avenue in Watsonville for 4 years. "For the most part it's a nice place. But the neighborhood, it's always been a little questionable," said David.

Two weeks ago that feeling was confirmed. David said someone went up to his apartment, broke down his door, and took about $4,000 worth of stuff. The worst part, it happened in broad daylight.

"It takes away your sense of security. That's the biggest thing. You're not at ease. I am still not at ease," said David.

Two days later, across the street Paul Gutierrez's truck was stolen. But it wasn't until an elderly neighbors house was broken into that neighbors decided, no more.

"You have to know when enough is enough," said Art Castadena.

Art began helping his neighbor Paul rally others. Together they went door to door and began asking neighbors to keep an eye out. And so far it's worked. Already Paul and his neighbors have helped police make four arrests. And according to Paul, this momentum is not going anywhere.

"It's to make sure everybody is secure and safe and can walk down the street without having to worry about what color they are wearing," said Paul.

Paul says a confrontation with some kids on his street Monday added stress to his existing health problems, which sent him to the hospital later that day. But Paul said even though the stress may have pushed him over the edge, it hasn't knocked him down.

"I am still standing. Being diabetic is definitely hard on the body but I was still standing at the end of the day and I'm going to be standing tomorrow," said Paul.
