Sacramento, Calif. -- Drivers in California will now be able to use their cell phones to show proof of insurance when being pulled over for traffic offenses.
AB1708 is just one of dozens of bills signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown on Friday, which goes into effect January 1, 2013.
The new law will allow motorists to show electronic proof of insurance, whether it be a phone, iPad or other mobile device. California Highway Patrol says some motorists forget to put a hard copy of their proof of insurance in their glove compartments, while others may not store one altogether on fears someone may steal the paper with their address on it.
