LAFAYETTE, Calif. - The body of missing San Luis Obispo Cal Poly student Brett Olson was found in the Sacramento River Sunday morning. Olson lived in the Cal Poly community and Sunday it was somber and quiet, as many people responded in disbelief to hear the friend they've been searching to find all week is now dead.

"Having him turn up this way was a shock," says Katie Neff, a close friend of Olson.

Katie Neff says she's known Olson since kindergarten and Sunday morning she got the call Olson's body was found.

"A fishermen spotted him in the river and then his family went over immediately after to identify his body," says Neff.

Olson went to Chico for the annual "Labor Day Float" and was last seen by his friends last Sunday afternoon.

"At first I was just in shock, I mean after last night there was so much hope in finding him today it just doesn't seem real," says Neff.

Many people found out about the news through Facebook and since then the social media site has been blowing up with comments. Even Olson's parents are using the site to help cope with their loss. They responded to a page saying, "there are not words to describe how moved we have been by everything all of you have done for us. You filled us with hope and love this week which we will carry with us for the rest of our lives."

"Everyone on Facebook is saying how sad it is to have a Mustang pass away no matter who it is, no matter if you knew him or not," says Trevor Weis, a student at Cal Poly.

"Brett was just the kind of person who could always put a smile on your face, he was hilarious made the best out of every situation..I think for a while it's going to be pretty sad around here," says Neff.
