Man Captures Fiery Big Rig Crash

Posted: Updated:

SANTA CRUZ MOUNTAINS, Calif.- Russell Clash was driving on Highway 17 late Wednesday night when he came across an intense and fiery big rig crash near the summit.

He captured it all on his cell phone, showing the flames and explosions of the truck. Clash said he had to stand behind the guard rail, below the embankment.

"I went through a lot to get the photos, including taking a twenty foot drop off the highway into the steep terrain, being put in an ambulance, losing my car keys, having car towed with my dog locked inside, but what an explosion," said Clash in an email to Central Coast News.

Over the video, you can hear Clash narrating from his post down the highway. he says, "I am hiding in bushes waiting in anticipation as fire truck pulls up to put out the fire before any more explosions happen, as you can see the cab caught on fire and is now catching the whole side of forest on fire."

The fire actually spread to brush off the road and burned about a half acre. The highway opened back up around 5 a.m. Thursday morning.
