Highway 17 Shut Down After Big Rig Fire

Posted: Updated:

Santa Cruz, Calif. -- All lanes of Highway 17 were shut down Wednesday night after a nitrogen truck caught fire near Summit Road.

The fire erupted around 10pm, on the winding highway between Santa Cruz and San Jose.

California Highway Patrol says the big rig was a nitrogen tanker truck. According to the CHP, the truck caught fire near Redwood Estates, and flames spread to a nearby hillside.

California Highway Patrol closed lanes in both directions during the cleanup. Lanes were not reopened until just before 6am, when CalTrans picked up the last cones.

No word on what caused the fire. CHP continues to investigate.
