Small Pit bull Abandoned on Busy Highway

Posted: Updated:

WATSONVILLE, Calif - Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Staff said a two year old pit bull was rescued Tuesday afternoon. She was left alone along Highway 152 in Watsonville tied up with a belt to a mile marker. The dog had no microchip, shelter, or water.

Shelter Manager Melanie Sobel said the bad economy plays a factor in people leaving behind their pets. "We are seeing a lot more owner surrenders and a lot more animals being abandoned by people who don't have the financial means to take care of them," said Sobel.

Shelter staff said 70% of the dogs they get are pit bulls. Abandoning animals is a misdemeanor offense in California.

If anyone has information contact the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter at (831) 454-7200.
