Man Arrested in 8 hour Salinas Standoff

Posted: Updated:

Salinas, Calif. -- A standoff that lasted almost 8 hours leads to three Salinas men arrested. One of them was wanted on a $180,000 warrant!

Police arrested known a gang member 23 year old Alfonso Reynoso.  Neighbors say this isn't the first time its happened and its eating up the city's resources.

Gang Task Force officers spotted Alfonso Reynoso Friday night along Harden Parkway and chased him all the way through neighborhoods to his home on the 200 block of Manhattan Drive.

For hours neighbors waited while flash bangs and gas were used in an attempt to scare Reynoso out of his home.  "He had secreted himself into an attic space inside of the house and was hiding there and refused to come out until our swat members went inside of the house and found him," said Commander Vince Maiorana.

Neighbors waited up for hours until it was safe to go back in their homes. One neighbor told Central Coast News this isn't the first time they've had the swat team down their street. "Police work their butt off. They come out here a month later, set up shop and go through all this. Pick him up and then the judge lets him go," said Tim Johnson.

Tim Johnson says this revolving door between the courts is exhausting for the already scarce resources at the Salinas Police Department. Officers said Alfonso Reynoso's warrant came from the Monterey County Superior Court.  "I just feel sorry for the hard working policemen of this city. They go through all this and then the judge and the attorney's cut a deal and let everybody off," said Johnson.

Tim said he's hopeful that there will be change on how gang members are handled through the judicial system, and spare cities from wasting money and resources they're forced to use on calls like tonight. "The systems obviously broken. Otherwise this wouldn't be happening on an ongoing basis," said Johnson.

The two other men arrested were taken into custody for parole violations.
