Capitola Feels Rebuilt After Floods in 2011

Posted: Updated:

CAPITOLA, Calif. --  We are checking out the lively streets of Capitola where the city is almost fully recovered after a major flood back in March of 2011. Now a community has come together to improve their city especially with all the unique businesses it has to offer.

While tourist see it as a destination for Carin Hanna it's home. She's a 3rd generation in Capitola and has owned The Craft Gallery downtown for more than 43 years. "Yes its been hard economically especially moving after the floods but I love it," said Hanna.

Two floods wiped out village businesses back in March of 2011. Leaving Carin's business out of commission for almost four months. The Craft Gallery was one of several stores that had to be moved all the way down the street for several months in a tented parking lot before they were able to be relocated downtown.

Now its all smiles for Hanna and other businesses in the Capitola Village. Despite it all a community came together again and again. So much in fact, Hanna's fellow business neighbor Joyce, is still waiting to pay it forward to those who stepped up. "There was a father and a son that I keep hoping to come by and say 'hi' to me because I didn't think I really properly thanked them enough," said Joyce.

We asked community members what they were proud of, they told us it was not the beach but the community, spirit and the love of people giving here. Like its all one big family.
