SALINAS, Calif- A 48-year-old woman told police she was assaulted Wednesday night in the area of Market Street.
Police said that 31-year-old Joseph Velasquez got into an argument with the woman after he propositioned her for prostitution. The victim told him to get lost, said police. That is when Velasquez got angry and hit her in the head and face several times, said police.
Police said that is when Velasquez picked up his bicycle and was about to hit the victim with it. However, the victim's boyfriend walked up and grabbed a hold of the bike, said police.
Velasquez walked away but was quickly spotted by arriving officers and taken into custody without incident. Police say that he denied everything, but was positively identified by the victim and witnesses.
Velasquez was transported to county jail on charges of battery and attempted assault with a deadly weapon.
