Daytime Curfew For All San Benito County Cities

Posted: Updated:

HOLLISTER, Calif- Some kids do it, they get dropped off at school, then once their parents are out of sight, turn the other way and ditch school. This sometimes leads to daytime trouble in the community. If you have a daytime curfew, Hollister police say crime doesn't happen as often.

"It's a tool for us to be able to help those kids stay in school, keep track of those kids that are causing mischief, and hopefully reduce some of the burglaries that happen during the daytime," said David Westrick, Hollister Police.

Officer Bo Leland said he's seen his fair share of gang activity in Hollister. And said due to a lack of police resources at times, a curfew is a tool which gives police a lawful reason to stop and talk to teens who are in violation.

He said the city has faced a series of daytime crimes from burglaries to drug deals, some by kids who are suppose to be in school.

"The community came together as a city and county and passed this ordinance to give us a tool to stop these crimes before they happen," said Leland.

The law applies to all areas of San Benito County, and it's all for one purpose, to keep kids safe. Something that even high-schooler Jonathan Reyes thinks will work.

"Less people will be in gangs and keep out of trouble. Everybody will be in a safe zone," said Jonathan.
