SANTA CRUZ - After several months of planning, the price tag for the Santa Cruz Warriors stadium grew from $4 million to $5 million.
Santa Cruz City Manager Martin Bernal said it's not surprising the stadium is going to cost $1 million more.
That's because a closer look was recently done on the project that was rushed to make it in time for the season.
"Essentially, it's just to meet all the fire and building codes that are necessary for the building to be able to function, as it's been refined with the engineers and architects," he said. "As it's gone through plan review and code review, the costs have increased."
He said some of the findings include more concrete for the stadium than the city thought.
Before it was thought the stadium would need more asphalt.
It also needs substantial footings to bolt it down.
The city said it has a plan to make up for the million-dollar difference.
"We're proposing to increase the loan amount and also for the Warriors to increase their capital contribution, so they're going to put more money forward," Bernal said.
The agreement between the city and the Warriors will increase from five to seven years.
What that means is the Warriors' required minimum payment every year of $250,000 will continue for two years more.
The team will also be paying additional rent, equaling to about $266,000.
"That's almost $800,000 in additional revenue just from the Warriors," Bernal said.
The city will also keep conessions revenue from all events.
For a 2,700 to 4,000-seat arena, like the Warriors stadium, it generally costs about $30-$50 million, Bernal said.
