Monterey Makes City in Turkey an Official Sister-City

Posted: Updated:

MONTEREY, Calif. - Monterey is in the final steps of adding a Turkish city into a sister-city program that is made up of six other cities and dates back to as early as 1965.

Monterey will officially name Kusadasi, a city in the European country, Turkey, one of their seven sister-cities this afternoon.

Kusadasi is a resort town that sits on the Turkey coast and thrives off its tourism industry, much like Monterey.  This is not the first connection between the two. They have existing ties with the Naval Postgraduate School and the Defense Language Institute in Monterey.

Turkish city leaders will tour police stations, fire house and other buildings during their visit. They will also stick around for the annual Turkish Festival that begins this weekend.

Thursday, Monterey mayor, Chuck Della Sala, will present a plaque at a ceremony in El Estero Park at 11:30 in the morning. The final agreement will be signed tonight at Colton Hall around 5:30.
