SALINAS, Calif- A student is accused of lashing out at a school administrator online threatening physical violence. Police said any social media threat is no empty threat to them.
Salinas High School said an assistant principal found out about the tweet from an anonymous source. Police won't tell Central Coast News exactly what the female student tweeted, but they said it described a physical threat and that's enough for law enforcement to step in.
"We investigate them thoroughly and if it crosses the line where it becomes a criminal threat, you know we have to take action," said Officer Miguel Cabrera.
Police said she hasn't been in trouble before. But was frustrated with the administrator and decided to sound off and just because it came out through social media, doesn't mean it's taken any lightly. Police said threats on social media are taken very seriously. They said word traveled fast about Monday's Twitter incident at Salinas High School. One student said he doesn't tweet, but he's glad police jumped into action.
"No didn't hear anything about that, but that's crazy. I mean cause you never know, there could be just one loose cannon and that's all it takes so," said Salinas HS student Tristan Doughty-Wood.
Police said the student was called in, given a citation and was sent home with her parents.
"I mean it could be language. But you know it's basically what is said and how the person that's the intended victim, you know how they perceive the statement," Ofc. Cabrera said.
The student was cited by police for the tweet. But it is a felony and she will have to face a judge in juvenile court.
