Does Downtown Monterey Need Another Bar?

Posted: Updated:

MONTEREY, Calif - "I love the people that just come in and just the eclecticness of the nature of Monterey," said Susan Walker who loves working at Crown and Anchor. The news about another bar, My Attic, opening just around the corner is exciting for her. And she is not alone. A lot of businesses are actually excited to have My Attic on Alvarado, they say it will bring more people to the area, and more people means more business.

But is another bar really what the streets of Downtown Monterey need right now? Bars like Mucky Duck and Luxe Lounge have had to deal with special ordinances due to night life problems. And Council member Fran Sollecito said when the business becomes a public nuisance then something needs to be done.

"If an establishment has incidences that rise to an unfortunate level where they are bothering neighbors and they are violating city laws then we will step in," said Sollecito.

But My Attic owner doesn't think his bar will run into any of these problems. The owner didn't want to go on camera but told me their strict dress code, security camera and overall ambiance will keep trouble makers out. And Susan Walker agrees, especially if it brings more money to an area struggling for business.

"Those types of issues are always going to be there, but in the end the good is going to prosper and good people are going to come out and spend their money," said Susan.
