WATSONVILLE, Calif- An accused murderer who tried to escape the law by coming to the United States has been deported back to Mexico, according to reports from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
According to the Mexican arrest warrant issued in January 1994, Alvaro Hernandez-Fuentes shot Alejandro Gomez Garcia three times. Authorities say that when he realized that the victim was not dead, he shot him three more times, killing him.
Hernandez-Fuentes' girlfriend told police that he was trying to force her to steal from a store to fund his escape to the United States, said officials.
For well over a decade Hernandez-Fuentes was hiding out in the United States. He was arrested in Watsonville in July after law enforcement officials received a lead from the Mexican Attorney General's Office.
A multi-agency team comprised of the U.S. Marshals Service, ICE Homeland Security Investigations, and the Santa Cruz Anti-Crime Team swooped in to arrest the fugitive.
On August 9, an immigration judge cleared the way for the Hernandez-Fuentes return back to Mexico.
"Criminals who seek to escape responsibility for their actions by fleeing to the United States will find no sanctuary in our communities" said Joseph Vincent, assistant special agent in charge for ICE HSI San Jose.
