Bridge Construction Back on at Pfeiffer Big Sur Park

Posted: Updated:

BIG SUR, Calif. - LaVerne McLeod has walked down this trail in Big Sur for more than 30 years. A local to the area, LaVerne said there's nothing like the beauty of Big Sur.

"The peace and serenity. The park is one place for peace and serenity," said LaVerne.

Today, the construction disturbed the peace of Pfeiffer Park, but that didn't bother LaVerne. "One of things that I have seen in the last few years is incompletion and today is the first time I've walked through in awhile and see them working on the bridge," said LaVerne.

The completion of the bridge has been idle due to lack of funding. Now Governor Brown cashed in bonds from Prop 84 passed in 2006 which gives state parks money to finish these incomplete projects. For the past 4 years park patrons have had to deal with idle construction sites, and closed parking lots with debris pile ups.

Right now there the main entrance used into the park gets so backed up on busy days its causes heavy congestion on Highway 1. The completion of the bridge will alleviate some of that congestion.

The bridge will cross over the Big Sur River making access to campgrounds easier. And that's not all, parts of the park have been closed for the past few years and after the bridge is done, park rangers hope to attract more tourist to these popular sites.

"People that have camped here for 2 or 3 generations will be able to go back to their favorite sites, or their parents or grandparents favorite site," said C. L. Price, Park Ranger.
