SANTA CRUZ, Calif - Police are saying to avoid Soquel Avenue east of Capitola Road until it reopens at 3:30p.m. because of a gas leak. Five business and several homes in the area have been evacuated. According to Santa Cruz Police, evacuees should also be allowed to re-enter the area at 3:30p.m.
People along La Fonda Road, from Highway 1 to Soquel Ave were also evacuated Monday morning. Deputies say that they placed reverse 911 calls to the homes in that area. An evacuation center was set up at the Santa Cruz Bible Church on 440 Frederick Street. Red Cross was on site to take evacuees.
Those evacuations also included students at Harbor High School, they were evacuated to a church on Roxas Street.
People in the area from Morrissey Ave. to Prospect Heights to Soquel Avenue were told to stay inside because of high gas levels that were detected in that area.
According to county officials the gas leak is from construction on a new behavioral health unit and is unrelated to the La Fonda bridge demolition.
Soquel Ave. between Capitola Rd. and 7th Ave will re-open in both directions at 3:30 p.m.
